Rohu ( Labeo rohita) is found commonly in rivers and freshwater lakes in and around
the South Asia and South-East Asia. It is very famous among the Bengali community in India. Here, is a simple recipe to cook Rohu Gravy in Bengali Style.It may be one of your daily recipes.
Ingredients:
1. Fresh rohu fish: 300gm
2. Onions (medium) : 2 nos.
3. Green Chilly : 7-8 nos
4. Red Chilly powder : 2 tsf
5. Turmeric powder : 1 tsf
6. Cumin powder : 1 tsf
7. Garlic paste :1/2 tsf
8. Ginger paste:1/4 tsf
9. Coriander leaves : for garnishing
10. Hot boiled water : 200ml for gravy
Salt to taste
(tsf: table spoon full)
Wash thoroughly the pieces of fish.Sprinkle the fish pieces with turmeric powder , red chilly powder and salt. Keep aside for the pieces to get marinated.Put oil in a wok and heat the oil. You should be careful so that the oil is heated , otherwise the pieces of fish will stick to the wok. Once the oil is heated fry the pieces one at a time.

Fried Fishes in heated oil
After the fishes are fried keep them aside.Add little more oil to the wok and wait till the oil gets heated.Add chopped onions and green chillies and fry till the onions turns golden in color. Add garlic paste and keep on stirring.Add onion paste and fry it till it gets slightly golden in color.Now add ginger paste,tumeric powder,red chilly powder and cumin powder and cook till the species are fried.
Add the previously fried fish pieces and mix well with the spices mixture in the wok.Pour the hot water to the wok till all the fishes gets submerged. Simmer till a thick gravy is formed.Garnish with coriander leaves. Your rohu chilly gravy is ready.Serve hot with steamed rice.
